Chapter 8 :: Where Next?: Applying the Lessons

     The promotion of the ecovillage concept is not intended to result in a proliferation of newly built neighborhoods. It is the desire of the ecovillage residents to see their efforts used as a building block for other projects. Where Next?, examines how the essence of an ecovillage is transferable to existing communities and other types of projects. Four Swedish projects are profiled. These include a community centered ecological renovation of one large and two mid-sized apartment complexes and an elderly housing project. These projects have obtained positive results through successful incorporation of either design or planning techniques similar to those in the ecovillages.

The true gift of the ecovillage is the proof that the future of our planet lies, not in extravagant techniques, but rather in the dedication to a better quality of life where individual and community goals are pursued through a shared commitment to a higher goal, the preservation of the environment.
